When you hear the word meditation, you might picture someone sitting cross-legged, perfectly still, and completely Zen. And if you don’t fit that image, you may feel like you’re doing it wrong. This is a fair assumption as meditation is portrayed around the world as something quite woo-woo. However, meditation isn’t about perfection or woo-woo. I’ve been practicing meditation for over 10 years, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: there’s no such thing as a perfect meditation session and you don't have to have a perfect pose to reap the benefits of meditation.
Women often carry the weight of the world on their shoulders—whether it's juggling work, family, caregiving, or personal commitments. Studies show that women tend to experience higher levels of stress (I know I do) than men due to societal expectations, emotional labor, and hormonal fluctuations. Women are natural nurturers, often prioritizing others' needs before their own, which can lead to built-up stress and anxiety if left unchecked.
The word meditate simply means to think deeply or focus one’s mind for a period of time. That’s it. No candles or spiritual rituals required (unless you love those!). The key is to focus as much as possible, and just like learning to ride a bike, the more you practice, the more natural it becomes. With time, you can calm those racing thoughts and create a space where God’s presence feels closer than ever.
Start Where You Are, Not Where You Think You Should Be
There’s no need to carve out an hour of your day or find a silent mountaintop retreat. Start with five minutes in a cozy spot where you can breathe and focus. Prayer and meditation don’t have to be long or complicated—God meets you exactly where you are. If your mind wanders (and it will!), gently bring your focus back to God’s Word, a simple prayer, or your breath.
